Billy Horschel Moves Past Memorial Tournament Meltdown of a Year Ago

Billy Horschel Moves Past Memorial Tournament Meltdown of a Year Ago

DUBLIN, Ohio — There should be plenty of good memories to draw on, especially what was perhaps the biggest victory of his career. But Billy Horschel’s mind drifted elsewhere Thursday and it’s been on his mind all week at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Despite winning the Memorial Tournament here in 2022, Horschel thought only of the 84 he shot in the opening round a year ago, a day that he said had him at the lowest point of his career.

Playing as the defending champion, Horschel said he was hitting shots from places he couldn’t believe, lost in the abyss of a swing change—and later, he learned, an equipment issue—that saw him part of an emotional, tearful news conference afterward.

“My confidence is the lowest it’s been in my entire career,” he said that day.

Things were much better during this opening round as Horschel shot a 3-under-par 69 at the Memorial Tournament, where Adam Hadwin led with 66 and No. 1-ranked Scottie Scheffer was a shot back after a 65. Reigning PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele shot 68.

“Every hole I played this week, I’ve been thinking, God, how bad I played that hole on Thursday last year,” Horschel said. “The last couple of days I’ve been thinking about it and even today, I was nervous waking up because obviously I’ve won here and I’ve played fairly well here in previous years.

“But that 84 still lingers a little bit. It’s that one little thing I needed to get over. And to play well today, hit quality golf shots and hopefully get over the hump of what happened here last year. There’s a little scar tissue from last year. Hopefully I got over that today.”

Horschel began the process of building back after that interview. He received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow players, and the low point became a turning point.

He dropped outside of the top 90 in the Official World Golf Ranking earlier this year then returned to winning ways by capturing the Corales Puntacana Championship, an opposite-field event that was played the same week as the RBC Heritage.

It was his eighth PGA Tour victory and first since capturing the Memorial in 2002.

“I think any tournament you win, when you come back, you want to have a respectable showing,” Horschel, 37, said. “Obviously the goal is to win, but you want to have a respectable showing as defending champ. Coming in, I had played some really bad golf. I had hit golf shots that I just haven't hit in my entire PGA Tour career. So that was fresh in my mind and that was a concern coming here. It was just sort of the tipping point.

“Shooting 84 when you're defending champ, it was sort of the lowest of the low points for me, and then from there, I can start moving on, and as I've said since, I had talked to my team about where my confidence was coming into this event last year, but to sort of share how—where my confidence was and share how vulnerable I was, just impromptu, after being asked a question, I think that next morning I woke up and I felt relief, just sort of getting it off my chest and everything, and then from there, I could sort of start moving forward again.”

The day was rough. Horschel made no birdies, six bogeys and three doubles. He had been struggling with his swing for months and it all went horribly bad that day.

The impromptu session with reporters actually helped him turn things around but not before he also discovered an equipment issue that he and his coach, Todd Anderson, had missed.

Horschel had testing done that showed the lie angle of his irons were as much as 3 degrees too upright, which caused his shots to go left. That’s why the cut he kept trying to hit wasn’t working. The work that he had been doing on his swing seemed so good and yet the ball wasn’t going where it was supposed to go. And now he had some answers.

“Then it was just some of the emotional side,” he said. “It was like saying, hey, I've played some really bad golf this year and I've hit some shots that I'm not accustomed to and where I've been over the last 10 years on the PGA Tour, I'm not where I want to be. I don't feel like I'm anywhere close to that.

“It really came down to the lie angles, and then once that got figured out right before the U.S. Open, it was more or less just getting rid of all the scar tissue, getting rid of all the bad shots that I had hit from January to early June and replacing those with quality shots and believing that we can swing a club again.”

It took some time, but Horschel had a fourth-place finish in August at the Wyndham Championship. That wasn’t good enough to get into the 70-player FedEx Cup playoffs—but Horschel played three times on the DP World Tour.

He did struggle with three missed cuts earlier this year before finding some form prior to his victory. That win helped him get a start at the Wells Fargo Championship via FedEx Cup points. He got into the Memorial on a sponsor’s exemption because he was not otherwise eligible for the signature event.

But Horschel has played well enough to get into next week’s U.S. Open via FedEx points and he’s in a good spot on the leaderboard here—and in a far better place both literally and figuratively than a year ago. He had five birdies and two bogeys in his opening round.

“I think I'm in a good position with three rounds to go,” he said. “Hopefully, I can just focus on hitting quality golf shots, be positive out there on every shot. As you guys know, this course requires a lot of precision. When the wind's blowing, it's even tougher.

“I never want to get too far out in front of my skis, but I think I'm in a really good spot where I am mentally and physically to continue to push forward to this weekend and see (if I can) do something special again.”

'Big Dom' DiSandro Earns New Eagles Job Title After Viral Sidelines Dust-Up in 2023

‘Big Dom’ DiSandro Earns New Eagles Job Title After Viral Sidelines Dust-Up in 2023

The Philadelphia Eagles security employee who went viral for his sideline spat with San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw has earned himself a new job title.

Dom DiSandro, known affectionately as "Big Dom" is now in charge of gameday coaching operations, according to a report from Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

DiSandro was previously the senior advisor to the general manager and chief security officer, so his role in charge of gameday operations is an add-on to his current role with the franchise. His new responsibilities, according to McLane, involve overseeing head coach Nick Sirianni's assistants on gameday. This new title will also make it more difficult for the NFL to discipline him directly if there's another sideline dustup in the future, according to McLane.

After getting into an altercation with Greenlaw in Philadelphia's Week 13 home game with the 49ers last season, DiSandro was handed down a suspension from the NFL that barred him from the sidelines for the rest of the season.

Safe to say it's water under the bridge within the Eagles' organization, so expect to see much more of DiSandro this fall when the team takes the field.

On The Mend: Kirk Cousins Injury and Fantasy Outlook

On The Mend: Kirk Cousins Injury and Fantasy Outlook

Kirk Cousins has proven to be a valuable asset in fantasy football, averaging more than 18 points per game since 2020. This impressive performance has consistently placed him as the QB12 on a per-game basis, despite being drafted outside of the Top 12 in fantasy drafts. Even in the 2023 season, before his unfortunate Achilles injury, Cousins maintained his high standards, averaging 18.72 points per game, which was seventh-best among QBs.

That Achilles tear occurred in Week 8. Cousins is now seven months removed from surgery and 36 years old.

In the off-season, the Atlanta Falcons put a big bet on Cousins’ health, signing him to a four-year, $180 million deal with $100 million guaranteed.

Interestingly, the Vikings chose not to.

Shortly after signing Cousins to the massive deal, the Falcons selected QB Michael Penix, Jr. with the eighth draft pick, appearing to hedge their bet.

Talent-wise, Cousins did not lose a step in 2023, averaging 291.4 passing yards and 2.3 TD passes a game before the torn achilles. He was also throwing to one of the top receivers in the league, Justin Jefferson, as well as an elite tight end, TJ Hockenson, and a talented rookie, Jordan Addison.

Now in Atlanta, there is a wealth of untapped potential. Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson are all brimming with talent but have yet to break out at the NFL level. The Falcons are hopeful new head coach Raheem Morris, new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, and Cousins can help unlock that potential.

Unlike Aaron Rodgers, who tore his left Achilles on his lead foot, Cousins tore his right Achilles, which is his plant foot where he gets power. Most people can return to normal use within six months of Achilles surgery. However, elite NFL quarterback play does not qualify under “normal use.” Cousins has been taking snaps at OTAs but is not yet 100%. Only time will tell how age and injury will affect Cousins.

We should expect a slow start for Cousins and this new offense, with everyone possibly hitting their stride mid-season. For now, I’ll leave my drafts without Cousins and hope to grab him on waivers if all goes well a few weeks into the season. I’m not willing to start the season with the risk, but the ceiling is tremendous.

Michael Bloomberg Joining Alex Rodriguez, Marc Lore Group to Purchase Timberwolves, per Report

Michael Bloomberg Joining Alex Rodriguez, Marc Lore Group to Purchase Timberwolves, per Report

The Minnesota Timberwolves just wrapped up their best season in decades, earning the third seed in the West and making the franchise's second-ever conference finals appearance. What's more, the roster seems set to succeed for many years with Anthony Edwards emerging as a fully-blown superstar. Now a former New York City mayor wants to get in on the action.

On Thursday, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported Michael Bloomberg is going to join the ownership group headed by Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez attempting to purchase majority control of the Timberwolves. Bloomberg was listed by Forbes as one of the 15 richest individuals in the world in April.

Lore and Rodriguez's efforts to acquire control of the franchise has been fraught with issues over the last few months. Their group had an agreement with current owner Glen Taylor to gradually purchase stakes in the team in chunks, with the payout for the final chunk to take control away from Taylor coming this year. However, in late March, Taylor claimed the team was no longer for sale because Lore and Rodriguez missed the deadline to do so.

According to Charania, the two sides are currently in arbitration to settle the dispute and it could stretch throughout most of the summer.

Per the report, Bloomberg is a big name but is not expected to be providing significant capital to get the deal done. Lore and A-Rod have brought in a lot of deep pockets to finance the purchase of the team. However, Bloomberg's wealth could end up important down the road as the Wolves aim to build off this season, which will require paying rather significant luxury tax penalties.

The key point, per Charania, is that adding Bloomberg means Lore and Rodriguez can complete the final $300 million payment to secure control of the franchise immediately as opposed to waiting until the end of next season, assuming the arbitration ends with a favorable ruling.

Either way, it seems Bloomberg might have a presence in Minnesota since the ownership group he's joining already controls nearly 40% of the team. An unexpected face, to say the least.

What Happens to UConn If Dan Hurley Leaves for the Lakers

What Happens to UConn If Dan Hurley Leaves for the Lakers

Dan Hurley, fresh off two straight national championships with the UConn Huskies, could be on the move.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday morning the Los Angeles Lakers are targeting Hurley to replace Darvin Ham as the organization’s next head coach, with talks expected to “escalate in coming days” as part of a “relentless” pursuit of college basketball’s hottest coach. Such a move would be a seismic one, particularly in the college game, where Hurley has built a budding dynasty at UConn and has rapidly entered the conversation for being the best coach in college basketball.

Here’s how such a move would impact UConn and what to look out for in the coming days should Hurley head to the NBA.

The beauty of the UConn job is very much in the eye of the beholder. On fundamentals alone, the job is less attractive than other blue bloods, given its location and the lack of big-time football money flowing through it, along with the subsequent long-term conference affiliation questions that come with that. Despite that, no program has had more success in the 2000s than UConn, winning national championships under three different coaches (two each by Hurley and Jim Calhoun, one by Kevin Ollie). The expectations for whoever would come next are national championships, plural. That’s a daunting task, especially given a potentially bearish financial future compared to the program’s peers in leagues with eight- and nine-figure annual television payouts coming soon.

The job opening in early June also presents problems. Wooing top coaches who’ve already built rosters for next season would be tricky and potentially complicated further by recent contract extensions that have ballooned buyouts into the $10 million or more range. A coach from outside the UConn family would also have his hands full retaining the current roster, a priority given UConn’s legitimate aspirations for a three-peat

That makes an internal promotion perhaps the most realistic option, either on an interim basis for a year or on a full-time basis. UConn has two strong candidates on its current staff in associate head coach Kimani Young and assistant coach Luke Murray. The perceived favorite would be Young, who took over coaching duties when Hurley was ejected in a famous 2022 game against the Villanova Wildcats and owns the top title on staff. Young has long been due for a head coaching opportunity and has been openly praised by Hurley several times for his work both in game-planning and recruiting.

Murray, an X-and-O savant and the son of actor Bill Murray, could also emerge as a potential candidate. If not tabbed the head coach, Hurley seems likely to push for him to join his Lakers staff.

If a full search were opened up, it’d be fascinating to see which candidates emerge. Rutgers’s Steve Pikiell was on the board when Hurley took the job and he played and coached under Calhoun, but has his most talented team yet set to enroll at Rutgers this summer. Another regionally tied name that could make sense is Seton Hall’s Shaheen Holloway, who went to an Elite Eight as the head coach at St. Peter’s. Athletic director David Benedict could also take big swings at the likes of Auburn’s Bruce Pearl (a Massachusetts native) and Alabama’s Nate Oats (who previously worked in New York at Buffalo), but neither seems likely to land.

If Hurley leaves, every player on the Huskies would have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal despite the portal being otherwise closed since May 1. Hurley rebuilt the Huskies’ roster this spring to have a chance to contend for a three-peat, reeling in highly regarded transfers Aidan Mahaney and Tarris Reed Jr., five-star freshman Liam McNeeley and retaining star forward Alex Karaban. A swift internal hire could help retain the current roster, though it isn’t a guarantee. Even with an internal hire made for 2023–24 after Bob Huggins was fired at West Virginia last June, five players entered the portal, with three eventually leaving.

Given the way prices in the NIL market have exploded for top transfers as supply has shrunk in the last month, it’s safe to say there would be hugely lucrative offers on the table to try to woo UConn’s current roster into the portal. How Benedict handles this search could be the difference between the Huskies being deep in contention for a third straight championship and facing a near-impossible rebuild in June after a significant roster exodus.

In an era of significant turnover among the sport’s legendary coaches, Hurley had emerged as one of the new faces of the game. His fiery personality and ever-quotable news conferences, combined with the remarkable success of the last two years, gave Hurley the chance to take over the sport and become this generation’s John Wooden or Mike Krzyzewski. To lose Hurley to the NBA would be a brutal break for a sport hunting for star power for fans to attach themselves to.

Plus, UConn going for a historic third straight title would be one of the biggest stories of the 2024–25 season. That pursuit being derailed in June by a coaching search would be a crippling blow months before the season tips off.

Mike McDaniel Using Unusual Tactic to Motivate Dolphins to End Playoff Win Drought

Mike McDaniel Using Unusual Tactic to Motivate Dolphins to End Playoff Win Drought

The 21st century has not been good to the Miami Dolphins.

A team that once won consistently has made just six playoff appearances since the 2000 season kicked off. Miami's last playoff win came on Dec. 30 of that year, an overtime wild-card victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

However, the Dolphins have put together a talented core in the 2020s. They own back-to-back playoff appearances to show for it—their first since 1997 to 2001—and are eyeing even greater success in 2024 under coach Mike McDaniel.

On Thursday, the ever-creative McDaniel revealed the history-minded tactic he's been using to motivate Miami this offseason. He told reporters the Dolphins were starting all meetings at 24 minutes past the hour—3:24, 5:24, 7:24, and so on.

“That’s how many years it’s been since the organization’s won a playoff game,” McDaniel said.

Before their current drought, the longest Miami had gone without a playoff win was just nine years—from 1973 to 1982.

The Dolphins will begin their quest to end that dry spell on Sept. 8 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

LeBron James Had Three-Word Message For A’ja Wilson After Aces Star Made WNBA History

LeBron James Had Three-Word Message For A’ja Wilson After Aces Star Made WNBA History

Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson put on a show in Wednesday’s 95-81 road win over the Dallas Wings that dazzled everyone from the average WNBA fan to Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

Wilson finished with 36.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 6.0 steals in the win to become the first player in WNBA history to record at least 35.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 steals in a game. The 27-year-old center is also the first player to drop 35.0 points and 5.0 steals in multiple games.

A day after the Aces’ win, LeBron James posted a three-word message congratulating Wilson on her latest feat.

James wrote on X, “THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!”

Wilson, a two-time league MVP in 2020 and '22, is averaging 27.9 points and a league-leading 12.4 rebounds per game in seven appearances this season, also a WNBA first. Wilson and the Aces (5-2) are chasing a third-straight WNBA championship to become the second franchise in history to win the league three seasons in a row.

The Edmonton Oilers are four wins away from ending Canada's Stanley Cup drought. The country is seeking its first NHL Championship since 1993 when the Montreal Canadiens were able to win it all.

Standing in their way is the Florida Panthers, a state that has now won five-straight Eastern Conference Finals, with the Tampa Bay Lightning winning two Stanley Cups along the way.

Game 1 is set to take place on Saturday night and I'm here to break down everything you need to know to bet on the opening stanza.

Panthers Injury Report

Edmonton Oilers

Stuart Skinner: All eyes will be on Connor McDavid, but I would argue the most important player in this game is the Oilers' goaltender, Stuart Skinner. When he brings his "A" game, the Oilers are near unbeatable, but he hasn't done that at times. Edmonton almost lost to the Vancouver Canucks in the second round almost solely due to poor play from Skinner. Whether or not they win the Cup may just come down to his performance.

Florida Panthers

Carter Verhaeghe: Carther Vergaeghe enters the Stanley Cup Final as the Panthers' leading scorer in the playoffs with nine goals. If the Panthers want to beat the Oilers, they need to find ways to score goals on a consistent basis and Verhaeghe may be the key to that happening.

I'm backing the Oilers to win the Stanley Cup and I like them to win the first game of the series, but my best bet is on the total. I like the UNDER 5.5.

The Oilers deployed a defensive style of play that helped them win Game 5 and Game 6 against the Dallas Stars. They sacrificed offensive rushes to stay home and while the puck was in their own end, they play a tight zone that forced the Stars to take low-quality shots from the perimeter. That helped Stuart Skinner as they prevented the Stars from getting high-danger scoring opportunities.

If they use the same strategy against a Panthers team, that plays a similar style to the Stars, we could be in for a low-scoring series.

Let's also remember the Panthers were one of the best defensive teams in the NHL during the regular season. They allowed just 2.39 goals per 60 minutes, the best mark in the entire league, while also giving up only 10.68 high-danger scoring chances per 60 minutes, which ranked seventh.

I'll take the Oilers and the UNDER in Game 1.

Pick: Oilers (+114) and UNDER 5.5 goals (-104)

Utah NHL Franchise Gives Fans Six Team Name Options to Vote On

Utah NHL Franchise Gives Fans Six Team Name Options to Vote On

Utah’s new NHL franchise has launched a second round of fan voting to help pick the name of the new team, asking fans to choose from six possible options.

The Arizona Coyotes are relocating to Salt Lake City next season after failing to find a new home in the Phoenix area. The team will play its first season with “Utah” on the front of its jerseys while the franchise develops a brand identity, but the team intends to play under its new name immediately. (The Utah franchise will technically be an expansion franchise, with the Coyotes franchise being declared inactive. Arizona owner Alex Meruelo can reactivate the franchise if he is able to secure a new arena within five years.)

The six options fans are being asked to choose from are as follows:

The vote is being conducted on the website of software company Qualtrics, which is owned by Utah NHL owner Ryan Smith. Smith also owns the NBA‘s Utah Jazz.

This is the second round of fan voting that the franchise has conducted. The first round was conducted last month, with 20 options to choose from. The franchise says that it received 520,000 responses in the initial round of voting and that the six options in the second round of voting accounted for 60% of the initial votes. Voting will be open until June 20.
