Dolphins' Mike McDaniel Gets Panthers Fans Hyped for Game 1 As Only He Could

Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel Gets Panthers Fans Hyped for Game 1 As Only He Could

Wearing a white Florida Panthers jersey, Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel made a special appearance at Amerant Bank Arena on Saturday for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

McDaniel led the Panthers' pregame festivities by banging the drum and encouraging the sellout crowd to chant "Let's go Panthers!" ahead of the puck drop. It went about as you'd expect.

McDaniel's pregame efforts appeared to pay off, as the Panthers scored first on a goal by center Carter Verhaeghe just four minutes into the game. They scored again two minutes into the second period for a 2–0 lead when center Evan Rodrigues lit the lamp for his fourth goal of this year's Stanley Cup playoffs.

Game 1 wasn't McDaniel's first time banging the drum at Amerant Bank Arena. He also did it last May before the Panthers' Game 4 matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final—which they won 4–3 to advance to the 2023 Stanley Cup final.

McDaniel will be able to enjoy the rest of the Panthers' Stanley Cup run, as his Dolphins wrapped up organized team activities and mandatory minicamp last week.

Chet Walker, Hall of Fame NBA Forward of 1960s and 1970s, Dies at 84

Chet Walker, Hall of Fame NBA Forward of 1960s and 1970s, Dies at 84

Chet Walker—a Hall of Fame forward for two NBA teams in the 1960s and 1970s—died Saturday, according to a Saturday evening report from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that cited the NBPA. He was 84.

One of the most consistent performers of his era, Walker never averaged fewer than 12.3 or more than 22 points per game in a season.

A native of Bethlehem, Miss., Walker played collegiately for Bradley. He averaged 24.4 points per game in a spectacular three-year career with the Braves, still the fourth-highest average in Missouri Valley history.

The Syracuse Nationals drafted Walker 12th in 1962; he played one season with the franchise before their 1963 move to Philadelphia. Walker made three All-Star teams in six seasons with the rechristened Philadelphia 76ers, and helped the team win a title in 1967.

Walker spent his last six years on the Chicago Bulls, with whom he made four more All-Star teams. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Bulls' Ring of Honor in 2024.

Memorial Tournament Round 4 Matchup Bets (Take Shane Lowry to Beat Rory McIlroy)

Memorial Tournament Round 4 Matchup Bets (Take Shane Lowry to Beat Rory McIlroy)

If you're a golf bettor like I am, wagering on the final round of this weekend's Memorial Tournament may seem like a fruitless effort. Do you really want to lay -450 odds on Scottie Scheffler to maintain his four-shot lead? Probably not.

I have good news for you. There are other ways to bet on the final round of a PGA Tour event. Consider placing a few matchup bets. Also known as "2-ball bets", these wagers are on a golfer to finish with a lower score than the golfer he's paired with.

Not only does it give us something to cheer for on Sunday, but it gives us a reason to watch some of the early tee times. I've locked in two for Sunday's round that I'll share for you in this article.

Let's dive into them.

All odds in this article are via FanDuel Sportsbook

We took Nick Dunlap at +150 against Matt Fitzpatrick on Saturday and it was a sweat-free winner. I see no reason why we shouldn't go back to Dunlap again on Sunday. He has been quietly been playing some fantastic golf this tournament and I expect that to continue in the final round.

The 20-year-old is second to only Scottie Scheffler in strokes gained: approach this week, averaging +2.41 per round. He's also been hot with his putter, gaining +1.56 strokes on the green. If he can just straighten out his putter, he could go low in Round 4.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout has gained strokes in all four major areas, but he hasn't been extremely impressive in any. He lost strokes with his irons on Saturday which doesn't bode well for him heading into Sunday.

I absolutely love this bet at the +140 price tag.

We're going to fade Rory McIlroy in the final round as he tees it up with his fellow Irishman, Shane Lowry. Lowry gained +4.44 strokes with his approach play on Saturday, which was the second most of the round next to only Scheffler. Meanwhile, Rory had a tough day with his irons, losing -0.56 strokes.

This bet is simply trying to take advantage of two golfers who are trending in opposite directions. If Lowry can carry the momentum from Saturday into Sunday, he's going to be in a great spot to beat McIlroy.

With both of these bets being at plus money, we just need one to hit to walk away with a profit. If both win, we're laughing.

Memorial Tournament Live Odds Ahead of Round 4 (Scottie Scheffler Set as Massive Favorite)

Memorial Tournament Live Odds Ahead of Round 4 (Scottie Scheffler Set as Massive Favorite)

We are three rounds into the Memorial Tournament and it looks like Scottie Scheffler is set to return to the winner's circle to capture his fifth win of the 2024 season.

Despite an ultra-rare triply bogey by Scheffler on the ninth hole, the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world still shot one-under par on the day to extend his lead on the field by one. If the live odds are any indication, the three golfers who are tied for second have little hope of catching him on the final day.

The odds listed below are via BetMGM Sportsbook

If you translate Scheffler's -450 live odds to implied probability, there's an 81.82% chance he wins the Memorial Tournament. Knowing Scheffler, those odds may be too long. It's tough to imagine a scenario where he coughs up his lead on Sunday.

Collin Morikawa (+1000), Sepp Straks (+1800), and Adam Hadwin (+2800) are the three golfers who sit four shots back of Scheffler at six-under par.

Xander Schauffele (+3000) and Ludvig Aberg (+4500) are the only other two golfers who have a remote chance of pulling it off. They both set at four-under par, six shots back from the Masters champion.

If you want to place a live bet on the Memorial Tournament but you don't want to go against Scheffler or lay the -450 juice on him to win, BetMGM is offering odds on "winner without Scheffler". Unless Scheffler lets the tournament slip from his hands, this will be a bet on which golfer finishes second.

If you want to get in on that market, I suggest Hadwin at +550 for a lot of the same reasons why I thought he was worth a sprinkle to win ahead of Round 3.

The Canadian has been showcasing elite ball striking so far this week, ranking third in strokes gained: approach through the first three rounds at +2.34 per round. His putter has caused him to fall behind Scheffler, but at a course like Muirfield Village, I want to take the guy who's had sharper irons than most of the field.

Pick: Hadwin (winner without Scheffler) +550

Fans Call for Gregg Berhalter's Job After Colombia Routs United States in Friendly

Fans Call for Gregg Berhalter’s Job After Colombia Routs United States in Friendly

The United States men's national soccer team played an international friendly against Colombia on Saturday as both teams prepare for Copa America and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the United States starting 11 players from Europe's five most prominent leagues for the first time, not much went well for the Americans. Colombia took a 2–0 lead in the game's first 19 minutes and ran away with a 5–1 win, the biggest margin in a loss of coach Gregg Berhalter's tenure on the United States sidelines.

No team had scored five goals against the United States since Mexico in the 2009 Gold Cup final. It was the United States' first time losing by four or more goals since a 4–0 loss to Costa Rica in 2016 that led to the firing of then-coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

Berhalter, who was hired as the USMNT head coach in 2018, was appointed last summer to lead the Americans to the 2026 World Cup. U.S. soccer fans weren't happy with Saturday's result, however, and their calls for a coaching change grew louder.

The United States will face Brazil on Wednesday for another friendly match ahead of Copa America, which is scheduled to begin June 20.

Dornoch, Horse Owned by Ex-MLB All-Star Jayson Werth, Wins 2024 Belmont Stakes

Dornoch, Horse Owned by Ex-MLB All-Star Jayson Werth, Wins 2024 Belmont Stakes

The 156th running of the Belmont Stakes ended in upset fashion Saturday at Saratoga Race Course, with underdog Dornoch besting the field to claim the victory.

Taking off from the sixth post position, Dornoch was neck-and-neck with Preakness Stakers winner Seize the Grey for most of the race. The horse, jockeyed by Luis Saez, broke free on the final turn and beat out Mindframe and Sierra Leone for the win.

Dornoch entered the race with 15-1 odds to win, per FanDuel, which ranked eighth in the 10-horse race. Sierra Leone, which finished in third place, was the slight favorite.

Dornoch is owned in part by former MLB All-Star Jayson Werth, who played 1,583 games for four teams from 2002 to '17. Werth won the 2008 World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies. He is now a Belmont Stakes winner.

"I would put it right up there with winning on the biggest stage," Werth said on the FOX broadcast. "Horse racing is the most underrated sport in the world, bar none... This is as good as it gets in horse racing; this is as good as it gets in sports."

Dornoch's victory Saturday in the Belmont Stakes marked an end to this year's Triple Crown races.

Rory McIlroy Exhibits Optimism After New PGA Committee’s First Meeting With Saudi PIF

Rory McIlroy Exhibits Optimism After New PGA Committee’s First Meeting With Saudi PIF

DUBLIN, Ohio – Rory McIlroy struck an upbeat tone in describing the first in-person meeting between a PGA Tour transaction committee and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which backs LIV Golf.

The committee, including Tiger Woods, met with the PIF and governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan on Friday evening in New York. McIlroy joined via video conference from the Memorial Tournament, where he is competing this weekend.

“Very productive, very constructive, very collaborative,’’ McIlroy said after the third round at Muirfield Village Golf Club. “I think those are probably three words I would use to describe it. Yeah, it was really good. Definitely things are heading in the right direction. A lot of progress was made. I can't really say much more than that, but it was really positive.’’

McIlroy, who shot 73 and is tied for 11th in the tournament led by Scottie Scheffler through three rounds, was pessimistic about the state of negotiations just a few weeks ago at the PGA Championship in the aftermath of PGA Tour Policy Board  member Jimmy Dunne’s resignation.

Dunne, who resigned on May 13, had been part of the negotiations more than a year ago that led to the initial “framework agreement’’ that was announced June 6, 2023. Dunne was the first one to reach out to Al-Rumayyan in an attempt to bring peace to the men’s professional game.

Woods, McIlroy and Adam Scott were named last month to a “transaction committee’’ that is to deal directly with the PIF as part of a plan to get investment in the new PGA Enterprises.

The others on the committee are PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan; former Tour player and board liaison Joe Ogilvie; Joe Gorder, who is an executive with Valero and the chairman of PGA Tour Enterprises; and John Henry, a principal with Fenway Sports Group and part of the Strategic Sports Group, which earlier this year invested $1.5 billion in PGA Tour Enterprises.

McIlroy said he prepped with the transaction committee for 90 minutes prior to the three-hour meeting.

“Maybe not surprised but maybe more encouraged,’’ McIlroy said. “I think a lot of progress had sort of been made. But definitely encouraged.’’

McIlroy said in an interview on Thursday that the committee and the PIF have been meeting remotely three times a week for the past several weeks.

“In terms of the deal, like the financials and the legals and all that, I think those three calls a week were more to do with their investment committee and SSG ... that's what those calls were.

“But I think last night was more talking about the future of the game and the vision and that was where I thought there was a lot of progress that was made.’’

Asked if he has a better understanding of what the PIF’s goals are in investing in PGA Tour Enterprises, McIlroy said:

“You've got to understand, they're a sovereign wealth fund. They invest in companies and in different things and they want a return on their investment. That's what they want. It doesn't seem like they're getting that at the minute within golf [with LIV Golf], and this—hopefully if things progress and we get to a certain point, then hopefully they see a future where that can happen, they can start to get some returns on their money.’’

The PGA Tour earlier in the day released a statement about the meeting in which it said progress was made.

“Representatives from the PGA Tour Enterprises Transaction Subcommittee and the PIF have been meeting multiple times weekly to work through potential deal terms and come to a shared vision on the future of professional golf,’’ the Tour said. “On Friday evening, an in-person session in New York City included the entire Transaction Subcommittee and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan and his team, where more progress was made.

“We remain committed to these negotiations, which require working through complex considerations to best position golf for global growth. We want to get this right, and we are approaching discussions with careful consideration for our players, our fans, our partners and the game’s future.’’

Idina Menzel Singing 'New York, New York' at Belmont Stakes Draws Mixed Fan Reactions

Idina Menzel Singing ‘New York, New York’ at Belmont Stakes Draws Mixed Fan Reactions

Each of the United States' three Triple Crown horse races—in an only-in-America touch—has, or has had in the past, its own signature song.

The Kentucky Derby has "My Old Kentucky Home," a Stephen Foster ballad popular during the Civil War. The Preakness Stakes formerly had the martial, pro-Confederate "Maryland, My Maryland"—finally jettisoned in 2020.

The Belmont Stakes, however, has the people's champion—the beloved "New York, New York," made famous by Frank Sinatra in 1980. Its fame, on par with "Happy Birthday," makes it hard to butcher.

However, many fans weren't feeling Broadway legend Idina Menzel's rendition before the Belmont Stakes Saturday. You can judge for yourself here.

Some compared it to the most infamous sports vocal performance of this century—Fergie's national anthem at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.

Sinatra's version was used as a point of reference (although to be fair, who could hope to compete with Frank Sinatra?)

A few fans noted that Fox's audio setup did Menzel no favors (this appeared especially true on the last verse).

All told, theatre and horse racing made strange bedfellows.

Even fans of Menzel had to concede it wasn't the finest hour for a vocal powerhouse.

Utah NHL Franchise Asked Prospects Bizarre Question in Pre-Draft Meetings, per Report

Utah NHL Franchise Asked Prospects Bizarre Question in Pre-Draft Meetings, per Report

The franchise formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes is preparing for the upcoming 2024 NHL draft as it navigates its move to Salt Lake City next season.

Utah, which owns the No. 6 pick in the draft, reportedly got a bit creative while conducting interviews with prospects during this weekend's NHL scouting combine in Buffalo.

The Athletic's Arpon Basu reported Saturday that Utah's front office was asking prospects for their Uber passenger rating.

A passenger rating on the Uber app is given by drivers after a ride is completed. Drivers give a grade of one through five stars based on the passenger's timeliness, cleanliness and courtesy throughout the ride. Perhaps Utah's front office considers that number a glimpse into prospect's personality off the ice.

Aside from which prospect it'll select with the No. 6 pick, Utah has plenty to figure out before next season begins. Earlier this week, Utah released six team names currently up for fan vote to decide the franchise's nickname—down to the Utah Hockey Club, Blizzard, Venom, Mammoth, Outlaws and Yeti. Fans have the chance to vote on their favorite from last list until June 20.

Regardless of which team name earns the most fan votes, the club will simply wear "Utah" on its uniforms next season. The new nickname and branding will debut during the 2025-26 campaign.

Utah will make its draft choice after the San Jose Sharks (No. 1 pick), Chicago Blackhawks (No. 2), Anaheim Ducks (No. 3), Columbus Blue Jackets (No. 4) and Montreal Canadiens (No. 5) are on the clock. The draft will be held at the Sphere in Las Vegas on June 28 and 29.

U.S. Men’s National Team Starts 11 Players From Top European Leagues for First Time

For decades, American soccer fans have been dreaming of a United States men's soccer lineup littered with players who ply their trade in the world's greatest leagues.

That dream is now reality.

On Saturday afternoon, the United States started 11 players from Europe's five most prominent leagues—the Premier League in England, Ligue 1 in France, Bundesliga in Germany, Serie A in Italy and La Liga in Spain—for the first time against Colombia.

The United States XI Saturday included goalie Matt Turner (Nottingham Forest), defender Chris Richards (Crystal Palace), defender Antonee Robinson (Fulham), midfielder Gio Reyna (Nottingham Forest, on loan from Borussia Dortmund), midfielder Weston McKennie (Juventus), midfielder Christian Pulisic (AC Milan), defender Tim Ream (Fulham), midfielder Johnny Cardoso (Real Betis), striker Folarin Balogun (Monaco), midfielder Tim Weah (Juventus) and defender Joe Scally (Borussia Mönchengladbach).

The landmark game is the Americans' penultimate clash before opening Copa America against Bolivia on June 23.
