Brewers vs. Phillies Prediction, Odds, Pick and Probable Pitchers for Monday, June 3

Brewers vs. Phillies Prediction, Odds, Pick and Probable Pitchers for Monday, June 3

Two first-place teams in the National League face off on Monday night – the first game of the day in Major League Baseball – and the Philadelphia Phillies are heavily favored over the Milwaukee Brewers

Philly enters this game with the best record in the NL, and it will have NL Cy Young favorite Zack Wheeler on the bump for his 13th start of the season. While the Brewers haven’t officially released who their starter will be, it appears Bryse Wilson will either start or come in after an opener in this matchup.

DraftKings Sportsbook has player props up for both Wheeler and Wilson.

With Philly set as such a big favorite, how should we bet on this matchup? I’m eyeing a play on the total on Monday.

Milwaukee Brewers

William Contreras: One of the best catchers in baseball this season, Contreras is hitting .316 with eight homers and 44 runs batted in across 59 games. He’ll be a driving force for Milwaukee’s offense if it can knock off Wheeler on Monday.

Philadelphia Phillies

Zack Wheeler: The NL Cy Young favorite, Wheeler has been lights out this season, posting a 2.32 ERA and 2.78 FIP. The Phillies are just 6-6 in his 12 starts, but Wheeler has recorded a win in each game that Philly has won. He’s coming off six innings of two-hit ball against the San Francisco Giants in his last start.

In the 2024 season, no team has hit the OVER more than the Brewers (34-22-3), and I’m leaving there again on Monday.

These two teams are No. 3 (Milwaukee) and No. 5 (Philadelphia) in OPS this season, and Wilson could be due for some regression on the mound despite his respectable ERA in 2024.

Wilson has a Fielding Independent Pitching of 5.00 and an expected ERA of 4.75, a sign that he’s been a little lucky so far this season. Against a Phillies lineup that has several sluggers, that could be an issue.

Plus, in Wilson’s last two outings, the Brewers have combined for 16 and nine runs, clearing this total on both occasions.

I don’t love taking an OVER when Wheeler is on the mound, but he has given up at least three runs in four of 12 starts and two or more in six of 12 outings. It may not be a lot, but it’s enough to help this total in what could be a big game for the Philly offense.

Pick: OVER 8.5 (-105)

Rays' Richie Palacios Equals Brother, Uncle With First Career Walk-Off Hit

Rays’ Richie Palacios Equals Brother, Uncle With First Career Walk-Off Hit

Before Thursday, Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Richie Palacios was the low man on the totem pole of clutch family members.

Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Josh Palacios—Richie's brother—had clubbed a walk-off home run against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 30, 2023. Former Kansas City Royals catcher Rey Palacios, Richie's uncle, also owned a walk-off grand slam against the Boston Red Sox on May 14, 1990.

Now, Richie has joined the club.

Palacios's walk-off single gave the Rays a 6-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics Thursday—and gave Palacios, at last, the first walk-off of his three-year career.

"I was doing an interview the other day, and my brother has a walk-off and my uncle has a walk-off. And I said in the interview, ‘Better get a walkoff before this becomes a family thing.’ I didn’t know it was going to come (Thursday), but it is exciting that it did," Palacios told reporters postgame via Kristie Ackert of The Tampa Bay Times.

Palacios is slashing .262/.360/.369 for Tampa Bay this season with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 48 games.

Bryce Harper Viciously Destroys Bat in Dugout After Striking Out vs. Giants

Bryce Harper Viciously Destroys Bat in Dugout After Striking Out vs. Giants

Bryce Harper endured a difficult first at-bat of Wednesday's game against the San Francisco Giants, striking out swinging to Kyle Harrison in six pitches.

It certainly wasn't the result Harper was looking for as he aimed to provide an early spark for the Philadelphia Phillies in the first inning, and he was irate upon returning to the dugout.

When Harper got back to the Phillies' dugout, the 31-year-old unleashed his fury on his bat, smashing it to bits by repeatedly slamming it against the bench. Shrapnel from Harper's bat could be seen flying around the dugout as he vented his frustrations on the very same bat he'd just failed to produce a hit with.

Things didn't get better from there, either.

Harper struck out again in his second at-bat of the game. And when he came up for a third time, tensions flared between the two teams.

Harrison threw two pitches up and in on Harper, one of which clunked off the knob of his bat, prompting some rage from Philadelphia's dugout. Benches cleared as the two teams barked at one another before things eventually settled down.

Harper then returned to the batter's box and grounded out to shortstop for the final out of the fourth inning.

It was a frustrating start to Wednesday's game for Harper, though his teammates helped pick up the slack offensively.

Giants Pitcher Mason Black Recorded His First MLB Strikeout and His Dad Couldn't Believe It

Giants Pitcher Mason Black Recorded His First MLB Strikeout and His Dad Couldn’t Believe It

The San Francisco Giants called up pitcher Mason Black from Triple-A ahead of Monday's game vs. the Philadelphia Phillies, giving Black the opportunity to make his MLB debut in his home state of Pennsylvania.

Black, who's originally from Scranton, Penn., made the start on Monday for the Giants. He recorded his first career strikeout in MLB, and his parents were fortunately in attendance to see this milestone happen in person.

His father, George, could barely speak at first when NBC Sports Philadelphia interviewed him after the first inning because of how excited he was for his son.

"This is awesome," Black said. "I sat there in disbelief because I couldn't believe that he did that. I think it's unbelievable what he's able to achieve."

Black finished his first MLB start with eight hits, five earned runs and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. He threw 51 strikes out of the 84 pitches thrown.

Phillies' Trea Turner Expects to Be Out Six Weeks With Hamstring Strain

Phillies’ Trea Turner Expects to Be Out Six Weeks With Hamstring Strain

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left hamstring strain, but he'll likely be out much longer than that.

Turner told reporters in Philadelphia that he expects to be out for about six weeks.

If that projected timeline holds up, Turner would miss around 30 games and be able to return sometime around June 15.

Turner picked up the injury in the fourth inning of the Phillies' 4–3 win over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night. After a pitch glanced off Giants catcher Tom Murphy's glove, Turner showed off his incredible speed by scoring from second base on a passed ball. But he told reporters that he felt something in his left hamstring a few steps before crossing home plate.

Turner was replaced at shortstop by Edmundo Sosa in the top of the fifth.

It will be tough sledding for the Phillies (22–11) without Turner in the lineup. The 30-year-old is batting .343/.392/.460 with 10 doubles and 10 stolen bases in 33 games this season.

To take Turner's place on the 26-man roster, the Phillies recalled infielder Kody Clemens from the Triple A Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
